Pope-Gosser China7-1/8" Motto Plate
Tennyson Poem, Unicorn Mark (c. 1905-20)
This antique plate was made by Pope-Gosser, and it features a stanza from a charming Victorian poem called "The Brook" by Alfred Lord Tennyson:
I chatter, chatter as I flow
To join the brimming river.
For men may come and men may go,
But I go on for ever.
The plate measures 7-1/8 inches wide across the coupe rim. It is glazed in a medium green that fades to lighter green (from left to right), with pink highlights in the center. The centerpiece shows a bridge crossing the brook, surrounded by a curved half-circle and pink and yellow flowers.
The plate is in good condition, with no chips, cracks, or crazing. There is some wear to the surface (most visible in the darker green area) and the lettering for the poem is a bit worn (see closeup photos).
The bottom shows the Pope-Gosser unicorn mark over "Pope-Gosser China" in a banner. I believe this mark was used from about 1905 to about 1920.
